SASANIAN KINGS. Hormizd II, 303-309. Drachm (Silver, 28 mm, 4.11 g, 3 h). Draped bust of Hormizd II to right, wearing winged crown with korymbos and falcon’s head; legend along the dotted rim, running anticlockwise from 11 h to 1 h, ‘mzdysn bgy ʾwhrmzdy MRKAn MRKA ʾyrʾn MNW ctry MN yzdʾn’, i.e. ‘mazdēsn bay Ohrmazd šāhān šāh Ērān kē čihr az yaz(a)dān’ (‘The Mazda-worshipping Lord, Hormizd, King of Kings of the Iranians, whose essence is from the gods’ in Pahlavi). Rev. Fire altar flanked by Hormizd II and an attendant wearing mural crown, both holding barsom bundle; ‘NWRA ZY’ to left, ‘ʾwhrmzdy’ to right, i.e. ‘ādur ī Ohrmazd’ (‘Fire of Hormizd’ in Pahlavi). Göbl type I/1a. SNS II, type Ia/3a. Lightly toned. Very minor cracks, otherwise, good very fine.
